    A loooooooong time...

       I haven't posted an entry since February...and it's been a wild five months! I'm still working on the novel (after a ton of edits) and am working with an editor with a big publisher in NYC to help me finish. A lot has gone on in the book, but I could use some help...I'm making one character a Christian who has a crisis of faith after taking a class in biology: do evolution and genetics disprove the existence of God? I'd love to hear from anyone who has faced those questions-how did you resolve it, and where are you now? Any insight would be great...also, what kind of things do you do if you're a Christian high school sophomore in the suburbs who goes to a mainstream church (like United Methodist or Presbyterian)? Thanks guys...and will write more-Dave

    I haven't updated in a long time...so here goes:

    * I just finished sending mom a letter about her alcoholism. It told her how sad and angry I felt when she was drinking. That's a big step for me-finally standing up to all the denial and saying this is going to stop. I also started going to Al-Anon meetings, but I'm not sure it is for me. I'm not living with an alcoholic, and it seems like the group is a way to cope with that.

    *Finally sold our investment property and moving on to our next project;

    *Haven't worked on the book in weeks-the property thing tied up all my time, and I really needed a break. Hmmm thinking of starting again this winter, though...I have 123 pages and the names of several editors in NYC that my prof recommended.

    As for *fun* stuff...we're going to a ski resort in Massanutten, Va. next weekend-it would be a great excuse to go exploring in the Shennandoah Mountains. I'm from Michigan but love driving around the South-they just don't sell pickled pigs feet in the Midwest

  •    Bad news...turns out my mom's weakness is being caused by...alcohol. Yep, years and years of steady drinking have damaged her body to the point where she can't walk without a cane and falls. We all knew she had a drinking problem-me, sis, dad, friends. But it was the family secret, you know? Just be quiet and let it pass...only it didn't. Now she's almost crippled. It's the same way with anorexia. Fashion glamorizes the emaciated look even though everyone knows it's killing girls. Don't we become part of the sickness by staying silent about it?

  •    I asked that because my wife is overweight-her BMI is in the 30s, and always has been. My dad never thought she was good enough for me bcse of it. When we got engaged, he told me that he wasn't willing to see us, pretty much (I think) because of her weight.

       I got so mad that I almost threw my telephone across the room. I told him to a) f**k off; b) stay home if he didn't like it, c) we were going to get married whether he liked it or not and d) he would never see his grandchildren if he thought that way, when we had some. He got the message.

       Natalie is still fat after six years. But we're closer than we ever have been. we've moved away, bought a house, and shared a lot of ups and downs together. I can't fall asleep when she isn't next to me and I'll go through withdrawal if I don't feel her body next to mine. don't mean to sound gross, but our sex life is wonderful. It feels like all my walls are stripped away and she's healing the scars and cuts underneath with her touch. I love her, and it makes me sad how some girls think they're not worth anything because they are overweight.

About Me

  • Married to the beautiful and talented Natalie...I'm a journalist covering politics in Washington, D.C for a national newsletter. I'm also writing a novel about high school, and would love to get some input from current students about their high school years. Aspiring journalists-feel free to ask any questions about the field and what it takes to succeed in one of the nation's most competitive media markets.
